Cot Toys for Your Little Ones

Below information are obtained from Askbaby.com

Right from birth babies begin to learn about the world around them. The more stimulation they receive from their environment, the more opportunity they have to develop their senses and lay foundations for future learning. Cot toys provide a means of stimulating your baby's senses while they are resting and provide some entertainment for your baby in an otherwise bare environment.

Newborns are very short sighted, they are only able to focus on objects approximately 10 inches away and the rest of the world is seen as a blur. Young babies prefer to look at high contrast patterns, lights and brightly coloured objects; these in turn help to develop their vision. Many cot toys incorporate these attractive elements into their design and so help your baby to learn while at rest.

Babies also learn a great deal about their surrounding environment through the sensations produced by touch. They prefer soft, warm sensations to cold, hard ones so choosing cot toys that comprise different textures and materials will help to stimulate the development of this sense. Toys placed around the cot will also encourage your baby to reach and stretch towards them - this will help your baby to develop physically.

Babies also enjoy and are stimulated by music. Cot toys that play soft sounds and lullaby's will help to relax your baby and soothe them to sleep.

A huge variety of stimulating cot toys are available. The most popular are mobiles, toys that act as bumpers and tie to the side of the cot and colourful or musical nightlights. Mirrors are also attractive to babies as they are shiny and reflect light around the room.

When choosing a cot toy it is important to consider it's safety before the entertainment or developmental benefits. Cot toys should be tied to the cot bars so as to avoid suffocation and should also be free from hard or removable components and long strings. Once your baby is able to kneel or stand unaided mobiles should be removed from the cot area.

8 Signs Baby is Ready for Potty Training

Below information are obtained from Askbaby.com

Along with all the other milestones your child is passing, soon enough your little one will be ready to learn how to go to the toilet on their own. But how can you tell that it's time for him or her to start their potty training? We talk through some of the signs to look out for.

When will my toddler be ready for potty training?
There's no set age that children should be ready for potty training. Remember that every child is different and just because your son or daughter's friends at play-group have already mastered the art of using the toilet, yours will come to learn this in his or her own good time.

As a general rule, children usually aren't ready to be potty-trained before the age of 2, and some won't be ready to start until the age of 4.

Some children find it easier to learn if they have an older sibling to copy. Boys are also often a little later at starting to learn potty techniques than girls, though of course this isn't always true.

How will I know my toddler is ready?
Potty training is all about teaching your child to recognise the feeling of needing to go to the toilet, and then holding on until he or she reaches a potty or toilet.

There are several signs you can look out for that may indicate your toddler is ready for potty-training. For example, your child might...
  • Communicate to you that they are ready to go to the toilet
  • Hold on long enough to reach a potty or toilet
  • Pull his or her trousers up and down
  • Like to wear underwear and show a willingness to take this off to go to the toilet
  • Have their own words for 'pee' and 'poo' and are able to identify one from the other
  • Not like being in a dirty nappy
  • Stay dry for intervals of at least a couple of hours
  • Have fairly regular bowel movements.
These are all indicators that it might be time to introduce your child to the potty, though every child is different and so might show different signs when they are ready.

When should I not start potty-training?
Though the time to start potty training may not be so clear-cut, there are some times when you should definitely not start potty training. For example, if there are any significant events or changes happening in your child's life, potty-training should be left until things return to normality.

A significant change might be you going back to work, your family moving house, or having a new baby on the way. In any situation that might cause stress to your little one it's worth waiting a while longer to introduce potty training into your child's life.

What else do I need to know?
It's really important to remember that if your child has accidents while learning to use the potty, never get angry about the mess or frustrated with your child if they are taking a while to learn. Try to make sure your little one associates going to the toilet with positive feelings rather than ones of shame or guilt. If your child doesn't pick it up right away, simply try again in a couple of weeks when they might be more ready to learn.

Likewise, if your child resists the idea of going to the potty, don't cause conflict between the two of you - it's better to back away from the subject and try again in a week or two with more of an easygoing approach.

Once your child does start learning, go at their own pace; it doesn't all need to happen at once. It will be some time before your child has complete toilet independence and can go by themselves, flush the toilet, wipe themselves, and so on. Try to be patient and as receptive to your toddler's individual learning curve as you can.

Baby's Sleep Patterns in Relation to Mum's Anxiety

Babies born to mothers who suffer from anxiety or depression prior to conception are more likely to have trouble sleeping in early childhood, research suggests.Findings of a study published in the official journal of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies show that infants aged six months to a year have a higher risk of waking through the night if their mother experienced anxiety before pregnancy.

The report indicated that maternal anxiety or depression could be linked to a 23 per cent higher chance of the disruptive sleep patterns during the night for babies at six months. Relaxation is not only important for the wellbeing of expectant mums but also for their unborn baby.A separate study conducted by the Murdoch Children's Research Centre in Melbourne found that allowing babies over six months old to cry for 20 minutes helps aid better sleep. According to the researchers, this "controlled crying technique" - approved by Australia's Maternal and Child Health Nurses - teaches the infant to fall asleep independently.

Baby Names

Are you looking for a perfect name for your baby? Here are some wonderful websites that I particularly like for searching baby's names and as well as their meaning! Have fun 'shopping' for your baby-to-be name and I am sure you will have a fun and exciting time looking for the perfect one!

This website has a popularity ranking for a particular name you are considering of. Just key in the ideal name in the search box and it will show a list of general information. The 'considering this name" section also shows a percentage of people who will likely to misspell or pronounce the name wrongly. In addition, people who own that name does reflects if their name been 'bullied' by calling nicknames! It's a fun webby I must say!

This website is nothing but simple. It list the names in accordance to alphabetic order, with its origin and meaning by the side. One good thing about this website is that you don't have to click here and there to look for names.

One interesting point about this search engine is the vast amount of names they have for you. They have included a number of origins of names and sometime maybe a little difficult to look around for names.

I fell in love at first sight for this website for its colour! Bright and happy colours that will cheer up your day! This is one of my hot favourites as they have many fun and interesting stuff. One very unique feature is that the webbie can relate songs based on your name. For example if you are called Kelly, they will list down songs that contain your name such as "Grace Kelly". In addition, they also feature about Pet names too!

I love this website as it contains many articles about baby names! I have fun reading their articles and I am sure you will too!
